Hole 18 - The match ends disappointingly for Europe as Garcia drives into the water after Toms finds the fairway. Garcia eventually find the front of the green in four and with Toms safely on the putting surface in two, the Spaniard concedes the match. USA win by one hole.
Hole 17 - Garcia takes on the green in two but finds the bunker left some 40 yards from the pin. Toms third finishes in the right fringe. Garcia splashes out but misses his birdie putt. Toms chips then holes the green and hole for a half in par fives. USA dormie one.
Hole 16 - Garcia gets a stroke of luck as his approach rebounds from a tree on to the edge of the green. But both players miss their birdie chances. USA one-up.
Hole 15 - Toms goes ahead for the first time with a birdie-four which Garcia fails to match. USA one-up.
Hole 14 - Garcia is long with his tee shot at the par three and chips to eight feet. He misses his par and concedes the hole with Toms facing a ten-foot birdie putt. Match all square.
Hole 13 - The cut and thrust continues as Toms misses for birdie, but Garcia also secures a par to protect his lead. Europe one-up.
Hole 12 - Garcia hits his iron to ten feet at the par three while Toms' shot finishes in the crowd. He secures his par three with a chip and ten-foot putt but Garcia rolls in his birdie to regain the lead. Europe one up.
Hole 11 - Toms grabs a second successive birdie-three to Garcia's four to take the match back to all square.
Hole 10 - Garcia takes on the green again at the par four but it rebounds on him. He hits the right bank with another spectacular drive, the ball lands on the bank and he fluffs a flop shot that finishes on the fringe. From there the young Spaniard misses his birdie but Toms, who laid up and chipped to ten feet, rolls in his birdie to win the hole. Europe one up.
Hole 9 - Both players have birdie opportunities after firing sound approach shots. Europe still two-up.
Hole 8 - Both players play the hole scrappily. Both drive into sand, find the green in three and take two putts for a half in bogey-fives. Europe remain two up.
Hole 7 - Toms misses his 10-foot birdie putt at the par-three but after Garcia fires a seven-iron to six feet he holes for birdie to go two up.
Hole 6 - Garcia fires a superb approach to just over four feet and after Toms holes for his par-four, the Spaniard finds the bottom of the cup for a birdie to go one up for the second time.
Hole 5 - Tom amazingly wins the hole with a birdie-three with an 80-foot putt having driven erratically again and getting relief from beside a TV crane. Garcia plays the hole in regulation but misses his birdie putt as match goes back to all square.
Hole 4 - Toms drives poorly into the trees right and can only chop his ball back on the fairway from where he finds the green from 150 yards. Garcia hit the green in regulation but misses his 25-foot birdie. However, Toms long par putt for a half lips out. Europe one up.
Hole 3 - Garcia gets up-and -down for a birdie-four from short of the green after firing his tee shot into the rough after Toms hits the green in two but fails with his eagle chance. Match all square.
Hole 2 - Garcia misses a chance to go ahead with a tentative 10-foot birdie putt that he leaves short after Toms is conceded a par after being bunkered off the tee. Match all square.
Hole 1 - Rookie Toms, joint leading scorer for the Americans with Phil Mickelson, had the chance to put the pressure on immediately but misses a five-foot birdie putt after Garcia putts stone dead from 25 feet having bunkered his tee shot. Match all square. |
