Match 20 Hole-by-Hole Langer bt Sutton 4&3

Hole 15 - Langer makes no mistake at the par five after Sutton is conceded his par five, the German holes from six feet for his par to win 4 and 3.

Hole 14 - Langer has the chance to close the match out but he misses his 15-foot uphill birdie putt, then Sutton holes for a half. Europe dormie four.

Hole 13 - Sutton drives out of bounds and takes three off the tee and eventually concedes the hole. Europe four-up.

Hole 12 - Hole halved in par threes. Europe three-up.

Hole 11 - Sutton bounces back with a birdie-three to Langer's four. Europe three-up.

Hole 10 - Langer increases his lead as Sutton concedes the hole. Europe four-up.

Hole 9 - Langer and Sutton find the green in regulation but both take two putts for a half in fours. Langer reashes the turn in 32 to Sutton's 35. Europe three-up.

Hole 8 - Langer maintains his immaculate approach play and holes for birdie to increase his lead. Europe three up.

Hole 7 - Both players find the green at the par three but Langer has to hole from three feet for par to half the hole after Sutton secures his three. Europe two up.

Hole 6 - Langer secures a birdie-three and Sutton has the chance for a half from seven feet but misses. Europe two up.

Hole 5 - Langer goes ahead for the first time with a birdie-three after hitting a four-iron approach to four feet. Sutton drives poorly and leaves himself a 50 foot putt and takes two strokes for his par. Europe one up.

Hole 4 - Both players find the green in regulation at the par four with long irons but both miss birdie chances to leave the match all square.

Hole 3 - Langer misses the fairway with his drive and lays up but pitches to five feet and holes for a birdie-four to match Sutton's who takes two putts from 75 feet. Match all-square.

Hole 2 - Sutton drives into thick rough left and finds the green 75 feet away. He takes two putts for his par four, but Langer fires a wedge from 120 yards to three feet. However, the putt horseshoes out leaving the match all square.

Hole 1 - Sutton and Langer last met in the Ryder Cup singles at the De Vere Belfry in 1985, the German winning 5 and 4. This time both have chances of birdies from around 20 feet but both fail to leave the contest all square

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
