Match 17 Hole-by-Hole Montgomerie bt Hoch 5&4

Hole 14 - The remarkable Montgomerie wins his match 5 & 4 when he holes from nine feet for a winning birdie. It means the Scot is still undefeated in Ryder Cup singles. He has now won four and halved two of his head to head jousts.

Hole 13 - Montgomerie regains his four hole advantage when he hits his second shot to within inches of the hole for a winning birdie. The Scot is now five under par for his round.

Hole 12 - Hoch is nothing if not brave. He grabs a birdie to get back to three down with six to play.

Hole 11 - This intoxicating match takes a bit of a breather as Montgomerie and Hoch both have par fours.

Hole 10 - Montgomerie holes from 12 feet for another birdie. He goes to four up in his match.

Hole 9 - Montgomerie rams home a five foot par putt to win the hole after both men missed the green in two. The Scot goes into the second nine at three under par and three up on Hoch.

Hole 8 - The European lead man is on fire. He hits a long iron into 12 feet but this time just misses. Hole halved in four.

Hole 7 - The match hots up when both men hole out for birdie putts from short range.

Hole 6 - Montgomerie holes from 25 feet for a birdie and then watches as Hoch misses from 10 foot to halve. Europe two up.

Hole 5 - The Scot leaves his 25 foot putt for a birdie 14 inches short. Hoch raises his first putt six feet past and misses the return. Montgomerie goes back to one up.

Hole 4 - Montgomerie lips out for a birdie from 20 feet. The hole is halved in four.

Hole 3 - Montgomerie and Hoch both drive into trouble but the American nails at nine foot birdie putt to take the match back to all square.

Hole 2 - Montgomerie wedges into six feet at the second. Hoch leaves his 14 foot putt for birdie six inches short. Montgomerie's putt hits the right edge of the hole but does not drop. Hole halved in par.

Hole 1 - Montgomerie hits the longest drive seen at the first all week but Hoch hits his second in closer than the Scot. Montgomerie holes from 23 feet for a birdie. Hoch misses from 18 feet. Europe is off to a great start.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
