Match 19 Hole-by-Hole Clarke v Duval match halved

Hole 18 - Clarke and Duval share the honours with par fours. Both men miss the green but get up and down under the most intense pressure. The match score is now 11.5 - 9.5 in favour of the European team.

Hole 17 - The high drama continues. Clarke holes from 30 feet for a birdie but Duval then follows him in from 12 feet. The pair go to the last all square.

Hole 16 - Duval misses the green in two but pitches up to eight inches. The pair go down the 17th all square.

Hole 15 - Clarke birdies the par five from four feet and then watches as Duval holes out for a four from eight inches closer. The match is still all square.

Hole 14 - Clarke misses a short birdie putt that would have given him a one hole lead.

Hole 13 - The match could well go down to the wire. Both men record birdie threes to stay at all square.

Hole 12 - Duval gets back to level when Clarke drops a shot.

Hole 11 - Clarke has a great chance to win the hole but misses a five foot birdie putt. The hole is halved in four.

Hole 10 - Clarke stays one ahead of the former world Number One when both men secure regulation par fours.

Hole 9 - Duval drives into the rough on his way to running up a six. He is now one down which means that at this stage Europe is ahead in all of the top six matches.

Hole 8 - Duval pitches short from the back of the green but holes from four feet to match Clarke's regulation par four.

Hole 7 - Duval holes from 11 feet for a birdie to ensure the match goes back to level.

Hole 6 - Clarke finds water off the tee but Duval lets him off the hook. Clarke hits a great iron into 4 feet and holes the putt to salvage a brave halve in five.

Hole 5 - Duval holes a brave eight foot putt to halve the hole in par. Europe still one up.

Hole 4 - Clarke loses the chance to win the hole when he lips out for a birdie from nine feet.

Hole 3 - Clarke takes six to lose the hole to Duval's birdie four. The American goes back to one down.

Hole 2 - Clarke wedges into 10 feet. He missed but wins the hole when Duval takes three putts from 22 feet. Europe two up.

Hole 1 - Clarke goes into the match having lost his previous two Ryder Cup singles but you would not have thought so when he hits a wedge into 8 feet down the first. The Northern Irelander wins the hole with a birdie after Duval misses from 24 feet for a par. Europe goes one up.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
