Match 21 Hole-by-Hole Harrington bt Calcavecchia 5&4

Hole 14 - Harrington becomes the second European to win his match when he holes for a birdie two from 12 feet. That gives him a 5 & 4 victory and means he has now won both his Ryder Cup singles encounters. Europe now lead 10-8 overall.

Hole 13 - The hole is halved in par four.

Hole 12 - The Irishman is closing in on the winning post after the two men halve their second consecutive hole in pars

Hole 11 - Harrington remains four up after another hole is shared in par four.

Hole 10 - Hole halved in reulation par 4's

Hole 9 - Harrington holes from over 50 feet to claim a winning birdie and move to four up heading into the back nine.

Hole 8 - Both men take bogeys so it remains three up for the Irishman as the match approaches the turn.

Hole 7 - Harrington is in great shape to win his second successive Ryder Cup singles when Calcavecchia misses for a par from nine feet. The Irishman goes three up.

Hole 6 - No change after both men hole out in par four.

Hole 5 - Harrington birdies the hole to go to two up. Calcavecchia can do no better than a bogey five.

Hole 4 - Harrington hits a bunker shot to ten inches to halve in hole in four.

Hole 3 - Harrington puts his putting woes behind him when he holes from four feet to win the hole with a par five.

Hole 2 - The Irishman hits another great short iron into six feet but misses again. The hole is halved in four.

Hole 1 - Harrington beat Mark O'Meara in his first Ryder Cup singles three years ago. He hits his second shot into five feet but misses the putt to halve the hole in four.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
