Match 23 Hole-by-Hole Verplank bt Westwood 2&1

Hole 17 - Scott Verplank hits two shots onto the green and then two putts from 35 feet to secure a winning birdie. Westwood misses the green in two but hits his third into six feet hoping his opponent would make a mistake. He did not. The US wins 2&1.

Hole 16 - Westwood leaves a 40 foot birdie putt inches short of the hole. Cink misses from the back fringe so the match goes down the 17th with the American holding a two hole advantage

Hole 15 - Westwood might not be finished yet. He rolls in a four foot birdie putt to get back to two down with three holes to play.

Hole 14 - Halved in par 3's

Hole 11 - Verplank goes back to three ahead with a birdie three

Hole 12 - Both men score par three.

Hole 11 - Verplank goes to three up once again with a winning birdie three.

Hole 10 - The two competitors start the second nine by securing a halve in par four.

Hole 9 - Westwood has a two hole deficit to make up as he goes into the back nine after both men halved in par fours.

Hole 8 - Westwood gets back to two down with a birdie three.

Hole 7 - Another hole is shared in par.

Hole 6 - Verplank moves three ahead with a birdie and takes his own score to four under par as a result.

Hole 5 - The two protagonists both record par fours to halve the first hole of their match.

Hole 4 - Lee Westwood pulls one back with a long birdie putt. Verplanks misses from inside him. USA two up.

Hole 3 - Westwood's miserable start continues. He drives into a bunker. Verplank hits the green in two and then holes out for an eagle to go three up.

Hole 2 - The American goes two ahead with a par four on the second after Westwood takes five.

Hole 1 - Verplank becomes the first American to win the first hole in the singles when he secures a birdie to go one up on Westwood.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
