Match 25 Hole-by-Hole McGinley v Furyk match halved

Hole 18 - Ireland's Paul McGinley becomes the man who wins the 34th Ryder Cup matches when he takes his side to 14½ points under enormous pressure. The Irishman pulls his second shot well left of the green but then pitches to 11 feet and holes out for an historic par to halve his match with Furyk

Hole 17 - McGinley creates even more excitement when he holes from 12 feet for a winning birdie after Furyk had missed from just outside that range. The match is all square heading for the last.

Hole 16 - McGinley leaves his 25 foot birdie putt short of the hole. Furyk charges his first putt four foot past the hole but manages to hole the return to stay one up heading for the 17th.

Hole 15 - Furyk manages to hole out from four feet for a birdie four after McGinley had secured his birdie from ten feet. The match is still in the balance with the American one up with three to go.

Hole 14 - The pair halve the hole in par figures.

Hole 13 - McGinley holes a brave six foot par putt to get back to one down after Furyk drops a shot.

Hole 12 - Furyk edges two ahead when McGinley drops a shot to par.

Hole 11 - McGinley and Furyk halve the hole in par four. It is the first hole that has not changed hands since the seventh.

Hole 10 - Furyk comes straight back by winning the hole with a par to go back to two up.

Hole 9 - Furyk comes straight back by winning the hole with a par to go back to two up.

Hole 8 - McGinley gets one back when Furyk takes a double bogey six. USA are still one up.

Hole 7 - The impressive Furyk fires another par to stay two in front.

Hole 6 - The American remains two up after the hole is halved in par fours.

Hole 5 - Furyk bounces straight back with a winning birdie.

Hole 4 - Furyk misses a short putt for a par and that allows McGinley to get back to just one down.

Hole 3 - The American gets a second successive birdie and storms into a two hole lead. McGinley misses from close range with a putt that would have halved the hole. America are two up

Hole 2 - Furyk grabs a birdie to go one up on his Irish rival.

Hole 1 - McGinley starts his first Ryder Cup singles with a par to halve the hole against the more experienced Furyk.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
