Match 24 Hole-by-Hole Fasth v Azinger match halved

Hole 18 - Fasth finds the final fairway then fires his approach to the green some 30 feet above the hole. Azinger also finds the fairway but drags his approach into the left-hand bunker then holes it from there for an amazing birdie-three. Fasth, facing a treacherous downhill putt sends it past, leaving the match all square.

Hole 17 - Hole halved in par fives. Europe one-up.

Hole 16 - Fasth takes three to reach the green then faces an 18-foot putt for par. Azinger holes for par to win the hole. Europe one-up.

Hole 15 - A dramatic hole as Fasth pulls his drive and sees his second finish in the trees. From there he hooks his ball to the green, while Azinger find the green in regulation. Both have birdie putts and after Fasth putts poorly, Azinger has the chance to pull a hole back but also misses from eight feet. Europe two-up.

Hole 14 - Hole halved in par threes. Europe two-up.

Hole 13 - Fasth holes from 12 feet for a birdie-three to increase his lead. Europe two-up.

Hole 12 - Azinger has the chance to take the match all square at the par three but misses on the right for birdie, while Fasth secures his par to maintain his narrow lead. Europe one-up.

Hole 11 - Hole halved in par fours. Europe one-up.

Hole 10 - Fasth finds the water at the famous tenth to finish with a bogey-five and Azinger wins the hole with a par. Europe one-up.

Hole 9 - Hole halved in par fours. Fasth turns in 34 to Azinger's 37. Europe two-up.

Hole 8 - Both players miss their pars and the hole in halved in bogey fives. Europe two-up.

Hole 7 - Hole halved in par threes. Europe two-up.

Hole 6 - Azinger takes bogey to Fasth's par. Eueope two-up.

Hole 5 - Azinger chips in for a birdie-three to cut Fasth's lead as the Swede has to settle for a par. Europe one-up.

Hole 4 - Hole halved in par fours. Europe two-up.

Hole 3 - Fasth maintains his magnificent form with another birdie, holing for a four as Azinger takes five. Europe two up.

Hole 2 - Fasth rolls in his second birdie-three to win the hole as Azinger makes bogey. Europe one up.

Hole 1 - Fasth, unlucky not to have a point after two impressive displays, sinks his birdie putt from the right fringe to match Azinger's three. Match all square.

did you know?
1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
