Hal Sutton continued his great record in foursomes, winning his fifth match from seven outings. That was his second foursomes win at the De Vere Belfy, first partnering Craig Stadler in 1985 in the first foursomes, beating Howard Clark and Sam Torrance. He also beat Darren Clarke in the day one foursomes at Brookline in 1999, alongside Jeff Maggert

Thomas Björn, was unbeaten in his three matches, prior to today's foursomes

Sergio Garcia preserved his 100% foursomes record, after two wins with Jesper Parnevik in 1999 and the other with Lee Westwood

1961 saw all matches reduced from 36 holes to 18 which has remained the position since. In 1963 fourball matches were introduced and the overall match extended to three days from the previous two.
