The Ryder Cup is about more than outstanding golf. It also is an e-business that aims to lead the world in delivering the best possible service to millions of fans and the news media - on the course and around the globe, via the Internet. To do that, The Ryder Cup depends on an IBM e-business infrastructure and an e-business on demand solution that is steadily evolving to incorporate new performance-enhancing developments and to meet ever increasing demand.

The technology that underpins The Ryder Cup also helps thousands of other organisations around the world build robust, flexible e-businesses that keep pace with evolving marketplace demands. The Ryder Cup showcases how IBM’s hardware, software and services come together to provide a world-class e-infrastructure for one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events.

IBM, as the Worldwide Information Technology Partner of the 34th Ryder Cup, provides the equipment and services for results and statistics collection and distributes tournament data through information terminals located around The Belfry. As an extension of this information processing system, IBM has installed the programming interface, equipment and networking infrastructure that allows this and other information to be transferred to the official 34th Ryder Cup Web site, making all the results and statistics accessible to the world through the Internet. For the 34th RyderCup Web site, our goal is to do much more than just provide golf fans with all the results. We've put to use a wide range of the latest technologies to give visitors a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective of what it's like to experience the Ryder Cup. We're giving fans around the globe a "virtual seat" at The Belfry - we want fans to feel that they are a part of the Ryder Cup action.

The official Web site of the 34th Ryder Cup is powered by the same IBM hosting complex that has delivered some of the world's most highly visited event Web sites. IBM is the Information Technology Partner and Internet supplier for many of the world's most prominent sports events and organisations. Through its global team of professionals, IBM combines its expertise in solutions consulting and technology to deliver end-to-end, mission-critical, e-business solutions that keep sports fans in the game.

Whether golf fans want exclusive real-time scoring results, streaming audio and video of player interviews, news and round summaries or the latest pictures from The Belfry, this is the site to visit.

IBM Real-Time Scoreboard
The IBM Real-Time Scoreboard is a stand-alone, Java-based application that "pushes" scoring information to Ryder Cup fans. This means scores are delivered directly to the users’ Scoreboard as the scores change. This allows very fast delivery of live scores to users’ desktops. In addition to providing scores in real-time, the IBM Real-Time Scoreboard application provides Ryder Cup fans with news & interviews, radio, stats and links to other key sections of the site.

Increased Accessibility
Ryder Cup fans can follow the tournament through Internet-enabled mobile phones and handheld devices that support the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). During the tournament September 27th -29th, WAP subscribers can access real-time results and news from the tournament directly from their phones or handheld devices.

In addition, most of the site content has been optimized for use with IBM Home Page Reader 3.0, a self-voicing web browser that can be downloaded (via voice-prompted installation) free for a 30-day trial from: http://www-3.ibm.com/able/hpr.html

An impressive array of IBM equipment, technology and resources make this Web site possible:

IBM eServers
At the core of the technology used to power the Ryder Cup Web site are IBM's eServer pSeries (RS/6000 SP’s), IBM eServer xSeries, Personal Computer systems and ThinkPads. We use multiple geographically dispersed server “farms” to serve worldwide Internet users' requests.

The Ryder Cup event solution incorporates IBM eServer xSeries boxes and IBM sServer RS/6000 SP nodes. The combination of Linux and AIX provides the Official Ryder Cup Web site managers with flexibility, reliability and scalability required for www.rydercup.com. xSeries servers feature built-in intelligence that allows them to 'diagnose' themselves. This so called 'autonomic' technology, developed by IBM, helps reduce computer breakdowns by predicting system failures before they happen. The term autonomic computing is based on the autonomic nervous system, which regulates many fundamental biological functions without conscious control.

IBM Personal Computers and ThinkPads, interconnected via the latest high-speed LAN technology, have been deployed around The Belfry to form a virtual editorial room. This network allows simultaneous delivery of live scores, management of the global server complex, content publishing, and numerous other tasks required to provide golf fans with a virtual Ryder Cup experience.

IBM Cluster Systems Management software allows for the fast installation and improved management of hundreds of servers from a central control station. This clustering technology implementation is similar to that used by Linux super computers IBM has installed around the world.

Software
IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition is an e-business application deployment environment built on open standards-based technology. It is the cornerstone of IBM’s WebSphere application offerings and services and is used for the Net Poll application. The IBM HTTP server, based on Apache Web Server, is used for flat file Web serving.

WebSphere Edge Server is a powerful Web Site performance optimizing solution. Part of the IBM WebSphere product family, WebSphere Edge Server optimises resource utilization and improves network scalability. WebSphere Edge Server can improve Web site performance, improve server selection, load optimisation, and fault tolerance.

IBM WebSphere MQ Event Broker enables real-time distribution of scores using a robust publish/subscribe message broker.

DB2 Universal Database for Linux tallies on-site scores and generates tournament statistics, complete with live scores, completed matches and player biographies.

Lotus Domino manages the workflow and content management for the News, Photos, and Feedback sections of the Web site. Lotus Domino facilitates collaboration through integrated application services such as security, workflow and content management.

Tivoli Software provides extensive application and hardware platform monitoring for the entire Events Infrastructure. With its ability to closely monitor application processes and the physical resources spanning the multiple infrastructure locations, overall site integrity is assured via rapid notification of any system abnormalities to appropriate systems administration personnel.

The following Tivoli products are part of the infrastructure which supports www.rydercup.com:
  • Tivoli Management Framework
  • Tivoli Software Distribution
  • Tivoli Software Installation Service
  • Tivoli Distributed Monitoring
  • Tivoli Storage Manager ADSM
