Quite simply one of the very best finishing holes in the world of golf with its call to cross water twice. And the three previous Ryder Cups staged on the Brabazon Course have provided plenty of proof. Thomas has removed a fairway bunker that rarely troubled the good driver, but enlarged and reshaped another further up the fairway to make sure it preys on the mind. “It is a critical tee shot,” he says. “You’ve got to get it absolutely right, bite off as much of the water as you dare, hit the fairway around the 150-yard mark to leave something like a six iron approach over the water again.” Master that challenge and the well-bunkered, strongly tiered green, almost 50 yards deep, still poses a number of problems. The one thing not even a world-class Ryder Cup player will want is having the outcome of his match rest on a chip from the bank at the back of the green, steeply downhill and towards the water.
